Something that we’ve discussed in the past but neglected to cement down is the way in which the game actually begins. It really isn’t interesting to see your ship pop into existence in the middle of a bunch of enemies. I’d always liked the idea of being injected into the body via syringe or similar. And as of now, we’ve got injection. Check the clip to see how it looks.
Though we’re now in Alpha, the artists and designer want some sort of floating nanomachines to fly alongside you and actually make up the components of the superweapons that you end up using (shield, laser, charge, explosives). I’ve looked up some simple flocking behaviors and grabbed one that seemed to work alright. I’ve got a clip here if you want to see it in action.
One main problem I’m having with it is that for some reason (and it seems to be usually when there’s a low number of flocking boids) one or two will fly our in front of the ship and sort of vibrate out there. If I can’t find a way to stop this, I might either have to write my own movement algorithms or drop these nanomachines altogether due to time constraints.
